I and my husband are visiting your area in June and wondered if there are any descendants of the McDonald & Hutcheon families still living in or around Laurencekirk. Mary McDonald, my ggrandmother was born (1839) in Laurencekirk. She had 11 siblings (Elizabeth, Alexander, Jessie, Margaret, David, James, William, Helen, Henry, Jane & Robert). Her father, Henry McDonald (1811-1899) was born, married & died there. His wife, Mary Hutcheon (1815-1900), was born in Fordoun and died at Blackiemuir Ave, Laurencekirk. Henry's father, grandfather, & ggrandfather also were born and lived in Laurencekirk. Mary's parents were born in Marykirk and Garvock and grandparents were married in Laurencekirk and Garvock.
We are planning to visit the Laurencekirk cemetery where several of these ancestors are buried and would love to meet anyone who is a descendant who lives in the area.
Love your website which has given me a great feel for the place and some great photos and are looking forward to our visit.
Thanks also for allowing me to 'have my say'.

Norm Buchan,
Might be a slight confusion here, there
is a village of Hatton about 7 miles
south of Peterhead with a farm just out of the village with the same name, there
is also a Hatton 4 miles south of Laurencekirk but your own surname could
be a lead as to where you were as Buchan is the general term (geographically) for that area and also the most common surname.
Try the Peterhead website you might get more info from there. Good Luck.

Hi
I have been searching my family tree. I immigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1951, when I was 1, and we returned to Scotland in 1953. The ships log shows our return address as being Hatton Cottage, Laurencekirk, although all I can remember is growing up in Peterhead until we immigrated to Australia in 1960. The log may be wrong and it could have meant to be Halton House. Would anyone be able to give me any information about this cottage so I may be able to work out why we went their!

I was just browsing through Laurencekirk's site when I saw both my name, my Mums and my Uncle Hughs. I've passed Mabel's message to my Mum. It was so good to hear from her and we remember "Clark" very well. It is a small world indeed as all this info came about because Richard couldn't spell Laurencekirk. He obviously didn't go to Gordons College like Uncle Hugh and Billy Lindsay.

I have just located a wonderful book excerts of which are online which I would highly recommend
'History of the parish and burgh of Laurencekirk,' by William Buxton Fkaser, MA, Minister of Maryton, William Blackwood and Sons Edinburgh and London, MDCCLXXX
(authors name as I found it on the site but may be meant to be Fraser) It answered a lot of my previous questions on ancesters in the Laurencekirk area,[Charles Gibbon, famous author,George Henderson head of the Gardeners Society, his sons: James reknown publisher and Archibald (who owned the 100 acre farm next the Blackiemuir mill for over 30 years) and Edward Masson, brother in law of George who became Secretary to the Greek fleet under Lord Dundonald, then High Admiral of Greece. It gave me another generation of our lineage and verified other reference material I had found.

George Colburn (the poet) was the brother of my Great Grandfather (David Colburn) who, was the youngest of the siblings of George's Father and Mother.
I have been researching my family tree and have access to a copy of George's book "Poems on Mankind and Nature" through my brother. The first poem in his book was dedicated to his brother John, who was the first born child. Another poem is dedicated to his wife Eliza Nash. A copy of the book was donated by George to the Mitchell Library in 1908. I was also given the opportunity to see the copy of his book handed into the SIR shop in Ayr. Any further info on George's family would be appreciated.

More on the George Colburn story.
The book titled,"Poems on Mankind and Nature" contains two poems which were inspired by real life heroism.
One concerns a foreman platelayer named James Watt who prevented a train accident on 21st Nov 1910 that could have killed 300 fisher girls.
The other concerns a Sandy Adams who died while trying to save a a persons life at St Cyrus on 26th Aug 1919.
Anyone with information regarding any of these events should contact the SIR bookshop on Newmarket Street Ayr.

An email I received recently about a photo that I had submitted on another website has become quite interesting.
The Scottish International Relief(SIR) bookshop in Ayr had been given a volume of work by Scottish poet George Colburn.
Who is George Colburn ?,One of eight children George was born in Laurencekirk on the 11th August 1852.
At the age of 14 he trained as a grocer in Montrose.
He later moved to the US but returned after three years for health reasons.
He later married Ellen Eliza Nash who had been born in India and they had four daughters.
He worked as a fruit market commission agent in Glasgow and died at the home of his daughter in the city in 1937 at the age of 84.
SIR are at present in discussion with several libraries, including Laurencekirk to find a home for the book.

Laurencekirk is a lovely Burgh and bigger than I imagined. HUGE thanks especially to Tom Welsh for helping me to find so much more information and for padding out the the few facts I have. I can't tell you what your gift of the 2 bottles from my great grandfather's pharmacy or druggist days means to me. (Billy Lindsay could you pass this on please?) Also heartfelt thanks to all the others who went out of their way to be helpful, the bowling club and the chemist. I really hope to come back again soon.
Finally a message to Morgan Fisher - sorry I didn't manage to catch up with you this time to have a look at the bottle you have - next time I visit I would love to see the bottle if that's OK with you.

on Wednesday 03rd of June 2009 at 04:22:42 pmWith reference to your great grandfather's birth place I can assure you that "DRUMFORBER" is still very much a working farm.
1842 is quite some time ago but if you were to write to the present farmer he might be able to give you some information,
The address would be DRUMFORBER FARM

Robin, there are 2 schools.
A Primary School was built in 1999 which is still very much in use today.
The Secondary School (Mearns Academy) is still in use however there is proposed plans to build a new Secondary School.

Hello. I am considering moving to Laurencekirk. Part of the attraction was the recent open of the train station, which I still feel is an advantage, although am slightly disapointed to hear there is no return service from Aberdeen on Saturday evenings. I am very keen to hear what you locals think of the area. I enjoy the outdoors, mainly cycling and walking, which the area looks ideal for but am more concerned with evening entertainment, ie. eating out, socialising (quiet pint in traditional pub).....are there any good restaurants? This website indicates there are only chip-shops and takeways??? Which pubs would you recommend for a young-ish couple of 30? .....Has anyone complained yet re the noise of the railway? Thanks for taking the time to read my queries. Hope to hear from you. V.

I agree that the recently announced train fares from Laurencekirk are absurd and insulting. What is the point in having a new railway station if there is no incentive to use it? I live in Laurencekirk and commute to Dyce each day - the train fares will cost me over £85 per week, whereas driving will cost me less than £45! Clearly, it makes sense to drive, especially when the journey times are comparable (~1 hour). I think there needs to be some kind of petition over this issue. I for one will be writing to our MP. Furthermore...NO services on a saturday evening - no-one can afford a taxi from Aberdeen! What promised to be fantastic news is a HUGE disappointment. Do others agree?

At last Laurencekirk station is to re-open, albeit at the absurd cost of over £4m. What isn't generally known is that the fares are exorbitant. A single to Stonehaven is £5 with a £5.30 return and to Aberdeen the single being £9 and return £12.70. A slightly cheaper £11.40 Off Peak Return is available for those who can travel outwith the peak period along with an Advance Single at £6.30. The latter must be booked 24 hours in advance. Perversely, a rail journey from Insch to Aberdeen (a comparable distance) is charged at £6.50 single and £8.80 return. While the re-opening is to be welcomed, a car journey to Aberdeen costs around £10 (including parking) so it remains to be seen how many will se the train as a viable alternative. The main benefit is the journey time of just over 30 minutes.

Also read in the paper that the station will open Sunday 16th May'09 the first day of the new timetables.
The co-op like all local shops is expensive but is good for topping up and if you the BoGofs or what is on "the bargain" it can be as cheap as the biggies. Same goes for the butcher; more expesive than Asda etc but quality is much much better and we keep a local business in business.

I had an enjoyable time reading through this site and hope I one day get to visit in person but it is a long way from home. I am interested as my ggrandfather James Brechin Ballardie was born there in 1880. As his father and grandfather had an upholsterering business in Glasgow I can only assume his mother was in Laurencekirk for family support. His father Thomas Anderson Ballardie married his mother Catherine Henderson in 1869 and she was from Blackimuir and wedding banns were posted at Laurencekirk. His mother brought he and his siblings (5 children in all) alone to Australia when her husband failed to return from Ceylon where two of his brothers managed coffee/tea plantations. Her sister Isabella married Charles Gibbon in Laurencekirk. There son Nelson became famous for captaining the requisitioned cruise liner Aquitania which was the first ship to land soldiers during World War II. Catherine Henderson also had a sister Margaret and brother William. thanks for allowing comments on your site.

Hi,
I came upon this site by chance and see you have a picture of pupils from Laurencekirk Secondary in 1967 at the railway station going to Belgium. I was one of these pupils and wonder if it's possible to get a copy of this picture with a clearer view of everyone as am unable to make anyone out? I wonder even if any other pictures were taken of this?
Many thanks,

My Great Grandfather William Milne emigrated from Laurencekirk to Oamaru, New Zealand with his wife Margaret (Scott) around the 1880s. His father, George Milne who also lived his life in Laurencekirk and was an architect, I think. He was married to Margaret Milne (Duirs). Margaret's parents were David Scott and Margaret Scott (Reach). I would love to make contact with any Milne, Duirs,Scott or Reach relatives still in Scotland. Are any of these people related to you?

Hi Bill - thank you so much for taking the time to read my posting and for replying with such great information. I shall certainly be writing to Mr Welsh and it has made me even more determined to come and visit Laurencekirk as soon as I can. It is so exciting to know that there are items relating to my ancestors still around. To give a bit more information - James Laing had one son, David Burnett Laing who was born in 1896, who became a doctor. James' wife Eliza (nee Main) survived him by about 10 years. I don't know much about my Grandfather David except he married an Irish lady called Rose and had one son, my father, Ian Burnett Laing. During the second world war, my father Ian Burnett Laing was sent to Laurencekirk with his mother for safety and seemed to have lived there with my great grandmother for a period during the war. Thanks again for the extra information. Hope to visit Laurencekirk soon.

Laurencekirk, your say, does have a wider readership than I'd considered.
Even although the person who has requested contact with me, thanks to this site, has no information regarding Mains of Blackiemuir, we do have an important interest in common, viz., the importance of the Freedom of Information Act (Scotland). If you know nothing about this, do find out something which may prove invaluable to you. Contact: www.itspublicknowledge.info

Hi - further to my previous post I have discovered some more info about my Great Grandfather James Laing. He died in 1937 and was a pharmacist at 17 High Street. He lived here from 1884 until he died. He was also apparently largely responsible for the formation of Laurencekirk Tennis Club - is this still going? and a founder member of the Bowling club. If anyone has any info about any of this it would be great to hear from you. I am hoping to be able to visit Laurencekirk soon to dig around a bit but any other info would be great. Thanks. Anne

Dear Webmaster,
Now one month after my letter to your column, not one reader has taken the trouble or, indeed, had an iota of intelligence to respond to any of the questions I posed. Mr. Wallace of the Kincardineshire Observer was very considerate to print an interesting article pertaining to the Murray & Henry families but nobody replied to this article, either.
WHAT a strange or bored bunch you conceal in that area. Is there not even ONE person, who has the slightest interest in local history? Perhaps the locals have all been replaced by plumbers and builders from Eastern Europe, might you think? Gosh, this IS sad.
Best Wishes

I would be very pleased to know if anyone can tell me if Mains of Blackiemuir still exists, as that was the birthplace of my grandfather, James Murray, in 1856. His sisters, Isobel Bruce and Margaret lived at 11, Blackiemuir Avenue for many years, until the death of the latter, in 1939.
I have photographic images of my great aunts with their mother and another, when they were rather old ladies. There is a third image of a cottage with a cow
outside, which I wonder if is Blackiemuir Avenue.
My ancestors were among the first feuars in the area and I remember writing a letter to Dundee Courier & Advertiser, about forty years ago, telling of the portrait we had, which had hung in the Gardenstoun Arms.
Other ancestors were the Henry family, one who was the Rev. Henry of Marnoch. I have many addresses for this family, the first marriage being between John Henry and Isobel Logie, in 1790. They had nine children, born between 1791 and 1809
William, born 1791 (of Elfhill) married Mary Spankie, in 1839.
John, born 1793 (of Auchinblae) married Jean Robertson, in 1835.
Mary, born 1797, married James Leighton of Bowbutts, Strachen, in 1827.
Robert, born 1800 (Drumlithie) married Catherine Reith of Upper Milton, in 1831.
Isobel, born 1802, married David Bruce of Kinmonth, in 1828.
David, born 1806, married Margaret Corbet, in 1842.
Elizabeth, born 1809, married Lauchlan Fenton, in 1852.
William Lyall Smith of Pittengardner and who died there on 27th September 1886, was another relative.
I hope that this is of interest to some of you local people from whom I'd be delighted to hear.

Hello everyone!
I'm looking to move to Laurencekirk in the next few months. I've been down to visit a couple of times and absolutely love the feel of the place.
I was wondering if someone might give me information on any bars/restaurants in Laurencekirk, and if there are any tennis courts?
Also I'll be commuting to Aberdeen everyday for work, does anybody have an update on the reopening of the railway station?
Thanks so much for any help!

Wondering if there are any descendants of John Charles & Ann Hutcheon still living in or around Laurencekirk? I am researching my family and have just found out that my GGGrandmother was born in Laurnecekirk in 1823. She was
Jean/Jane Charles - daughter of John & Ann (Hutcheon) Charles. Jane had a sister Ann who married David Johnston and had at least six children.
Jane Charles turns up in Australia in the 1860s as Jane Spinks with four children.
I'm also connected to the Monteith, Glendye, Hunter and Cobb families.(Heaps more - too many to list!)
Bit difficult to do much research as I live in Australia. Would love to make contact with any rellies.

Hi, being a great admirer of all forms of dance, your line dancing classes sound quite appealing to me. Unfortunately, I am merely a novice when it comes to line dancing - as most of my experience has been in interpretive and contemporary jazz dance. Also, I would not be able to make every week due to other commitments - I shampoo my cats every other Thursday. Would your classes be open to a person like me?

Hi there everyone! I am hoping that someone might be able to help me find my Robertson ancestors who lived in Laurencekirk (and later removed to Stonehaven). My great x 3 grandfather was Charles Robertson (in the 1841 census the family lived on King Street), born in 1809 to John Robertson and Elisabeth Patterson. Charles lived there until between 1855 and 1860, then the family moved to Stonehaven. Charles was blinded by an accident and was receiving aid from the Church in 1855. He was married to Ann Falconer, and they had at least six children: Allan, born 1837; James born 1839; John, died in 1898, a Chelsea Pensioner married to Ann Leiper; Charles Jr. my 2nd great grandfather, born abt 1842-43; David, born 1851; Thomas born 1848. If anyone has any info about my ancestors, I would love to hear from you! Thank you for your kindness in helping me to find my family! Cheers!

I will be over to visit this summer. My ancestors came from this area. My earliest ancestor, John Young, held Bredieston. His second son worked as a wright at Balmakewan near Marykirk. His oldest son worked on Conveth Mains (Spuriehillock) for years but retired into Laurencekirk. His youngest of three sons, William, came to Canada in 1842. I love to come to Laurencekirk and talk to the people, but every time I do the people I meet seem to be from somewhere else...lots of English. I would like to know more of the ancestory of the "men of the Mearns". Where they mostly Anglo-Saxon, Picts, Danes, etc. I find the most Youngs in the parish records lived at Arbuthnot?

There is a small farm near called Burnhead, perhaps this is where your relative lived.

Hi Julie Cunningham,
Mr. Kinnear was the propietor of the Western Inn,which is adjacent to Kinnear Square(formerly known as the Moorie) He must have been a Council official before the Square was named after him. The "Moorie" was gifted by by Lord Gardenston as common ground and it was used for the purpose of selling livestock. However when the railway came to Laurencekirk it was a better idea to open a mart beside the station.
Kinnear Square is still common ground but it is now landscaped .
Hope this helps you with your research.

As well as the base at RAF Edzell, I understand that was a pub/hotel in Laurencekirk, called The Boar’s Head that used to put on shows. I think it was near the edge of the village (north end) where bands from Glasgow would come up and play at the weekend.
Dose anyone remember going to the Hotel or remember any of the bands that played there? I know it’s almost 30 years ago but any information would be helpful.

Hi Colin,
My father is Jimmy Davidson, now in his late 80s. He stayed in laurencekirk until he left school and moved to Aberdeen before the Second World War, but his sister, Minnie (Wilhelmina), stayed in Laurencekirk until, I think, the 1980s (she became a Mowat, and they had a shop, which later became a hairdressers). She spent her last years in Stonehaven. There were other relatives about town, but I'm assuming most are now dead. Many's the afternoon I spent in the cottage under the 'N' of the Laurencekirk sign at the top of this page when visiting my Auntie Jess!

Great to see this site! My great-grandfather was a well-known face in Laurencekirk. He was 'Auld Wullie Davidson'who was the Town Officer (fancy name for bell-ringer, road sweeper etc), and occasionally pops up in old photos in the Kincardineshire Observer. My father and late aunt were brought up in Lournie too. I was often taken for visits, and played round the town with my cousins.
My father tells me how Sunday walks up Garvock Hill were a great social occasion. It was a right of way, but when he and I tried it a decade or so ago we were pounced on by estate security types. He also talks fondly of the old golf course (which he says was taken over by a farmer to grow vegetables during the war, but never returned...he may be wrong about this, of course). Another fond memory of his is one of digging up lead soldiers which were buried after a shop was burned down (in the 1920s?), and the damaged goods were disposed of in a pit near a pool on the side of Garvock Hill.

Thanks for the reply on the Laurencekirk wooden hinge. I am trying to find some info on how to make these wonderfull hinges. They close flush, without a curve or dint on the outside back but somehow do not bind when opened. They were used mostly for snuff boxes or tea chests as they were air tight.

Like another visitor, I found this interesting site in Google. I am Gordon Reid and used to live and work in Laurencekirk between 1977 and 1980 at the Scania Truck division of Laurencekirk Engineering. I was on my O.E from New Zealand and remember getting off the bus from Aberdeen on my first day there and wondering what I had got myself into. But I was pleasantly surprised by the warmth of the local people I met, and went on to make some great friends. Unfortunately after returning to NZ in 1980, I lost touch with most people. I have been back a couple of times but have never run into many people I knew.
I would love to hear from anyone visiting this site who knew me or know of anyone who did, for an email catch-up. I might also be remembered as the guy that drove the distinctive Blue Triumph TR7 sports car, the only one in the district.
I may be contacted at gordon.reid@xtra.co.nz
